Norway is an amazing country, full of contrasts and contradictions. Experience the beautiful capital city of Oslo, the high mountains, the deep blue fjords and the world heritage city Bergen, all in just a few days. There a number of excellent pre-defined tourist routes which are worth following.
Why not follow the road between Halne and Tokagjelet which is designated as the national tourist route through Hardanger. The scenic road runs across Hardangervidda, one of Europes largest mountain plateaus, before following the incredible Hardangerfjord. The breathtakingly steep waterfall Vøringsfossen marks the dramatic and precipitous descent from the mountains to the valleys and fjords.
Or try the mountain road between Aurland and Lærdal which takes you from sea level to an altitude of 1,333 metres. As there is often lots of snow on either side of the road even in the middle of summer, it is known as the "Snow Road". A unique, recently constructed viewpoint at Stegastein provides panoramic views of the Aurlandsfjord.
The Fanitull Road (33 kilometres) crosses the mountains between Hemsedal and Leveld in Ål. The road makes its way through the beautiful countryside between the peaks of Lauvdalsbrea and Reineskarvet. There are lots of great places to stop for a break, or perhaps you would prefer to climb a mountain, such as Lauvdalsbrea?
The Sognefjell Road is the highest and most impressive mountain pass in Northern Europe (highest point 1,430 metres above sea level). Along the way you will find more records: Galdhøpiggen, Norway's highest mountain, and mainland Norway's largest glacier, Jostedalsbreen. It has been awarded the status national tourist route because of the spectacular and wild mountain scenery it passes through.
The Rondane National Tourist Route follows the border between the Rondane mountains and beautiful and tranquil valley from Enden, through Sollia and Atndalen to Folldal in the county of Hedmark. Along the route, exciting stopping points have been designed for taking breaks, parking for hikes and taking photographs. One such place is Sohlbergplassen which offers magnificant views of Lake Atnsjøen and the mountains of Rondane.
