As well as being blessed with vast number of long straight, tree lined, D roads, France is home to some of the finest drives in Europe.
Follow the Tarn River down the phenomenally scenic, and sometimes scary Tarn Gorge in central France. The river runs in a roughly westerly direction, from its source at an altitude of 1,550 m on Mont Lozère in the Cévennes mountains (part of the Massif Central). It cuts through the deep gorges and canyons of the Gorges du Tarn (that cuts through the Causse du Larzac), to Moissac in Tarn-et-Garonne, where it joins the Garonne River 4 km (2.5 miles) downstream the center of town.
Or follow the Route Napoléon, the route taken by Napoléon in 1815 on his return from Elba.
It is now a 325km section of the Route Nationale 85. The route begins at Golfe-Juan near Cannes, where Napoleon disembarked on 1st March 1815, Starting the 'Hundred Days' that ended at Waterloo. The modern route was inaugurated in 1932, leading from the French Riviera to Grenoble in the southern Alps. It is marked along the way by the flying eagle symbol.
